Rs 27.77 lakh collected as fine

Mapusa Traffic Police Department has booked 23,246 cases of traffic violations from January 1, 2010 to June 30 and collected Rs 27.77 lakh by way of fines.
It may be recalled that during the same period in 2009, Mapusa Traffic Department had booked 22,500 cases of traffic violations and had earned revenue of Rs 27,04,650. There has been substantial rise in the earning of the government on account of traffic violations in North Goa.
In all, seven police stations – Mapusa, Pernem, Bicholim, Valpoi, Porvorim, Calangute and Anjuna come under the jurisdiction of Mapusa Traffic Department.
The traffic department has booked 8,087 two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmets and collected Rs 7,97,900.
The cases booked under other major traffic violations and revenue earned by Mapusa traffic police are over speeding (681 – Rs 2,61,800), rash and negligent driving (231 – Rs 1.33,450), dangerous parking (1,195 – Rs 1,19,000), overtaking (1,146 – Rs 1,13,000), no entry (266 – Rs 2,64,850), tinted glasses (1,669 – Rs 1,66,400), without seat belt (1,734 – Rs 1,73,100) and driving without driving license (496 – Rs 2,45,500).
Mapusa Traffic Department Police Inspector Uday Parab said despite imposing fines, cases of traffic violations are on the rise.
“In most of the fatal accidents involving two-wheelers, it has been observed that riders who died did not wear helmets. The number of cases booked for riding vehicles without wearing helmets is huge, which indicate that two-wheeler riders prefer to pay fines rather than wearing helmets,” said PI Parab.
PI Parab further said the traffic department has forwarded the proposals to the government like installation of traffic signals near Green Park Junction at Guirim, creation of parking area near Kadamba bus stand, painting and installation of signboards at strategic locations to the government.
