MARGAO: The collapsed embankments of the River Sal were filled with sand bags to prevent further erosion of the bank. The embankments of Sal on the Benaulim side were washed away on June 22 after three days of continuous rains.
A portion of the tarred road had also collapsed into River Sal and embankments alongside the river had also washed away. The washing away of the banks had raised fear among the locals. Now, after over a month of delay the authorities have laid sand bags and filled the caved in part of the river bank to prevent further erosion.
Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva said that he had visited the place on Wednesday and had seen the work being done. “I will be visiting the place on Thursday again to see the work is completed,” Caitu said.
In the past, Caitu and Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar had visited and inspected the flood prone areas on the Western Bypass zone and River Sal areas. Taking stock of flooding in the Western Bypass zone, Caitu has made a persistent demand to have a flyover in area to avoid such incidents in the future.
In the past, the MLA has also criticised the Disaster Management Authority for failing to curb the collapsing sides of the River Sal at Benaulim on time.
