VASCO: In an unusual protest, two women from Sancoale refused to move out of the Sancoale Panchayat after office hours, after the panchayat staff refused to give them a copy of a resolution.
Lucy Fernandes informed reporters they had written to the panchayat secretary on March 28, requesting for a copy of resolution passed by the panchayat on the basis of her application filed on February 12.
On Tuesday morning, Lucy and her daughter-in-law, Victoria, met the panchayat secretary and the secretary asked the panchayat staff to give a copy of the resolution to them.
However, the panchayat staff did not give them the copy till 5.30 pm. Upset with the staff the duo decided to sit in the office till they got a copy of the resolution.
As the women refused to move out of the office, a Verna police team was summoned to the panchayat at 6.10 pm to persuade the two protesting women to leave the premises. The two women, however, refused to listen to the police.
Left with no option, the Verna police team along with women police constables moved both women out of the panchayat office at about 7.20 pm and took them to Verna police station, before they were let off.
When contacted, Sancoale Panchayat Secretary Narayan Azgaokar admitted that the women were picked up by the police after they had refused to leave the panchayat premises after office hours.
“They had asked for a resolution copy just a few days earlier. On the day of the incident, it was not possible to issue them a copy of the resolution given the workload in the panchayat and I had requested them to come the next day, but they refused to do so,” Azgaokar told Herald. He confirmed that the two women were issued the copy the next day.
