SANGUEM: With fate looming large over the closure of bars located within the distance of 500 metres from the National and State Highways, bar owners in Sanguem and Curchorem have called for a meeting on March 9 at Sarvodaya High School Hall, Curchorem at 3.30 pm.
From the government survey conducted in Sanguem, 128 bars and liquor outlets are reported to have been coming within the area of 500 metres from the Highways in the twin talukas of Quepem and Darbandora.
While Sanguem accounts 67 bars, the neighbouring Darbandora accounts for 61 bars within the earmarked distance of 500 metres. In the Sanguem town area itself which extends from Sanguem Court to Khairikanttem there are 15 liquor outlets which are set to be affected due to the Supreme Court order.
Sanguem and Darbandora being a mining belt were earlier severely affected due to closure of mining activities. Now, they brace for more trouble as after April 1, the liquor outlets coming within 500 metre mark of State and National Highways, face the prospect of closure.
