SANGUEM: The sugarcane cultivators at Wadem Colony No 2 in Sanguem are sore over acute shortage of water supply for their plantation.
“On account of acute shortage of water supply, the crop has started drying giving us sleepless nights,” a farmer Harischandra Bhandari said.
Bhandari informed that though the farmers have been regularly complaining to the water resources department officials of the problems faced by them in the locality, the officials have failed to supply water making the sugarcane cultivators suffer huge loss.
The whole problems of water supply is primarily caused due to seepage of water from the metal plates laid across the bhandara at Wadem Colony No 2 which is otherwise suppose to store the water for onward supply to the farmers.
However, given the continuous flow of water from the bhandara, the water storage capacity of the bhandara has affected severely, the affected farmers said.
The issue of water flow from the bhandara is frequently brought to the notice of the Water Resources Department officials, but to no avail. The farmers say that they are facing the water supply problem since past 20 years and the same is getting worse each passing year. This has led to huge loss to the farmers.
Bhandari alleged that most of the water across the bhandara goes waste due to the flow of water through the metal plates which are otherwise supposed to retain the water upstream the bhandara. Given the acute shortage of water, the farmers are not supplied water even once in a month as against the requirement of water supply at least once in a week.
