VEREM: Archives and Archaeology Minister Vijai Sardesai during an inspection at Reis Magos Fort on Wednesday emphasised on having a clear heritage policy for the state and said efforts are underway to expedite all projects in this regard.
Sardesai also spoke about the pending rope way project in the presence with RDA Minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar and the Archives and Archaeology director during the fort inspection.
He also referred to the recent presentation made by the GTDC headed by Nilesh Cabral on the proposal to the Town and Country Planning Department’s (TCP).
Sardesai, who also holds the TCP portfolio, pointed out that certain apprehensions were addressed such as the location of road and a tower at the site and added that government is trying to ensure that the project is executed soon.
“The ropeway project will not block the site or the view of the fort. This will be an attraction for tourists and more people will enjoy the rich heritage of Goa and the project will only enhance the beauty of the fort and not be an impediment”, said Sardesai.
The Archives & Archaeology Director apprised the minister about the progress and various works which were undertaken with regards to the restoration and maintenance of the fort and other activities.
On a positive note, Sardesai acknowledged and praised the efforts put in to maintain the fort and other historical sites such as the Chapora Fort, Saptakoteshwar Temple at Narve and Jain Basti in Bandora among others.
Sardesai shed light on endeavours to create a unique colour scheme for Goan houses, as part of the heritage conservation policy and on how this could add great visual aesthetic to the state.
He said, “We are in talks with the Charles Correa Foundation for grading of heritage buildings in Panjim, Margao and other conservation areas.”
On the demand by Old Goa residents for a heritage master plan, he said that the same would be looked into.
