PANJIM: Even as Congress MP Francisco Sardinha called BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, a detriment to society, he supported both the now withdrawn Ordinance on convicted leaders and AICC Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s outburst calling it a ‘complete nonsense’.
“I am with the views expressed by Rahul Gandhi and with the Ordinance as well, which has been cleared by the government,” he said at a press briefing in his party head office Wednesday.
There has been a lot of criticism after the Ordinance became public that it was brought out to protect convicted politicians. Rahul Gandhi, during an interaction with the media in Delhi, had denounced the controversial ordinance calling it ‘complete nonsense’ and said ‘what his government has done, is wrong’.
Sardinha, responding to questions on the issue, said “I am with Rahul Gandhi that criminal elements should be kept out from contesting. But there is also a feeling in the party that people who are convicted and undergone the sentence after certain time can be allowed to contest.”
He said there is a feeling among the party men that convicted persons cannot be ostracised forever. “If a person is undergoing a sentence for the crime he has committed, he cannot contest and once he is out of the jail, he can be kept away for sometime. That is precisely what is said in the Ordinance,” he said.
Congress MP Francisco Sardinha also called BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, a detriment to society.
“I beg to all the Indian citizens please don’t dream of such a man who will be detrimental to the society,” he said at a press conference Wednesday.
