Dengue had raised its ugly head last year when as many as staff members working in the ESI hospital, Margao tested positive for the disease. It was then suspected that dumping of debris, including metal at the hospital building construction site might be the cause behind the incident.
While the scrap has now disappeared, the hospital premises continues to play host to plastic and other waste, besides coconut shells.
In fact, when the Herald team visited the hospital, it found plastic waste dumped near the new building. Meters away from the building, one found coconut shells, besides vegetation around the vicinity.
ESI Medical Superintendent Dr Vishvaji Faldesai said the building has not been handed over to the hospital till date. “Presently, over 80 per cent of the building works stands complete. Once the building is handed over to us, we will ensure that the surrounding is cleaned of the debris and scrap items”, he added.
