MARGAO: Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has asked MMC chairperson Babita Angle to sell the new vehicle and pay the difference of amount herself.
It may be recalled that Herald had exposed MMC’s alleged “audacious” move of bypassing laws in buying a vehicle worth Rs 17 lakh for the chairperson.
Speaking to media after the Independence Day function at Matanhy Saldanha Administrative Complex, he said, “The vehicle, which has been purchased, has to be sold and the difference of amount has to be paid by the chairperson herself. The chairperson has to travel in her own vehicle from now on and set an example for all. If I become a minister in future, I will travel in my own vehicle and will not use government vehicles and that is the revolution we have to set in Goan politics.”
“In the legal perspective, I feel, for this chairperson having vehicle it’s quite legal, but on moral side I think she was wrong. The Fatorda Forward panel was elected to give new direction to politics and hence the move is wrong and we are not elected to enjoy on government coffers,” Vijai added.
“The new trend, which demands to be set is that, we are not in public life to privately enjoy public benefits. Chairperson is well to do, she is a doctor, she doesn’t need to enjoy the car on the municipal coffers. But I believe that this car has to be sold and the amount should be paid by the chairperson and travel in her own vehicle,” he advised.
The social media has been abuzz with the pictures of four luxury vehicles in front of the MMC these days including the new Rs 17 lakh vehicle. People have criticised the MMC for going in for a luxury vehicle.
