Shivaji fought to protect our identity: CM

PONDA: Describing Shivaji’s achievements as unforgettable, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar on Thursday stated that the great Maratha king had valiantly fought to protect the identity, self-respect and security of his countrymen from enemies.
Parsekar was addressing a gathering during the Shiv Jayanti celebrations at the Farmagudi fort in Ponda taluka.
“Chatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj was filled with patriotism and his achievements are unforgettable. Even after 350 years, we are inspired by the spirit of his patriotism. He had fought for the identity, self-respect and protection of his countrymen from his many enemies.
Others present at the function included PWD minister Sudin Davlikar, Panjim MLA Sidharth Kuncolekar, former chief minister Shashikala Kakodkar, ZP Members Poornima Naik and Shaila Borkar and Bandora Sarpanch Nayan Naik.
PWD Minister Sudin Davlikar also spoke on the occasion.
In his keynote address, Prof. Krishnaji Kulkarni recalled that Shivaji had fought for Swaraj and had imbibed the love for patriotism, despite all odds and even though military was smaller in comparison with his enemies.
“Due to his patriotic efforts, we now enjoy the fruits of Swaraj in Independent India. He never used wealth of his state for personal enjoyment, but contributed and sacrificed his life for his country. As a result, he is still a central figure in literature and drama across the country,” he added.
Later, various cultural programmes were conducted to mark the occasion.
