MAPUSA: Situation turned chaotic after hundreds of people crowded the Mapusa market to buy essential commodities during the first half of the day at Mapusa market on Friday.

After the State government gave partial relaxation to the lockdown in the State from Friday, hundreds of people from Mapusa and surrounding areas rushed into Mapusa to buy essential commodities such as groceries, fruits and vegetables. However, when people failed to follow the instructions given by police to maintain distance and discipline, police had to lathi charge to get people under control.
The number of migrants was more than the local people who were seen standing outside the few grocery stores, which were open at Mapusa on Friday morning. Apart from grocery stores, few local vendors had come to sell home grown veggies and few fruits vendors were also open.
People were found standing in the crowd outside the grocery stores as well as inside the market to buy veggies and fruits. A meat shop was also open at Morod and people were seen standing in line to buy eggs and chicken. Few shops at sub-yard Mapusa, were also open for public.
However even after announcing on the loudspeaker to maintain distance, people did not pay attention to the police, who had to resort to lathi charge to get the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Mapusa merchant association stuck to their decision to continue with the lockdown and kept their shops in the municipal markets closed on Friday.
The Mapusa municipality also began home delivery of essential commodities in the municipal jurisdiction.
