mapusa: After observing Janta Curfew on Sunday and another four days of total lockdown, several panchayats of Bardez are set to begin home delivery service of essential commodities with the help of people who have extended their support to panchayats as volunteers.

Several panchayat representatives and many villagers on Thursday morning approached the local police station asking for curfew passes for the volunteer to start the delivery process.
Panchayats such as Anjuna Caisua, Assagao, Bastora, Colvale, Revora, Pilerne Marra, Verla Canca, Calangute, Candolim, Parra are all set to start the delivery system and were awaiting for the Deputy Collector Bardez to issue the permission.
Panchayats like Tivim are still facing difficulty due to lack of volunteers and since there is inadequate stock available with the grocery stores.
Tivim Sarpanch Sunita Salgaonkar said that if the government is able to make provision of stock available to them, then they would be able to supply essential commodities to the public.
She further urged the police not act harshly with vendors who are providing such goods to the public.

Otherwise it’s difficult for us to reach to the public. We are working on mechanism to provide essential commodities to the people of Thivim as soon as possible, she added.
Elsewhere, Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo began the essential commodity delivery service for the people of his constituency. These include items such as sugar, rice, flower, pulses and tea powder as per their corresponding rates.
While some panchayats such as Anjuna Caisua, Calangute, Verla Canca and Candolim have assured to provide vegetables and milk along with groceries, panchayat such as Bastora, Tivim, Colvale and others are working on mechanism to provide vegetables to their respective areas.
On the other hand the Sarpanch and two panch members Reis Magos village panchayats have bought an entire godown of grocery items and have taken the initiative to home deliver these essential commodities to the public in their wards free of charge.
Meanwhile most of the panchayats in Bardez also surveyed and submitted a list of senior citizens/needy people who need to be provided with assistance, to the BDO.
It is to be noted that this took place earlier in the day, before the State government announced on Thursday night, that grocery and other stores selling essential goods will be open 24/7.
