PANJIM: The State government notified modifications to the road accidents scheme to do away with the earlier cumbersome process, in order to provide immediate monetary help to accident victims.

The scheme, now titled as “The Goa State Interim Compensation to Road Accident Victims, 2020” was earlier known as “The Goa State Interim Compensation to Road Accident Victims, 2015”.
“On an average, accidents result in 250- 300 people losing their lives and a large number getting injured; some with permanent disability and others with partial disability and more often than not, the deceased/injured happens to be the only bread earner of the family and not covered by any life insurance cover and in the event of death and disability of such persons, the entire family is disturbed emotionally, psychologically and financially,” reads the modified notification.
The government, as such, had proposed to provide such families ‘Financial Assistance’ irrespective of insurance cover enjoyed by the victim. In order to fulfill the assurance as well as for effective implementation of the assurance, the government enacted the scheme.
It was observed that the existing scheme didn’t meet the expected results due to the cumbersome process regarding insurance coverage of any nature. Therefore, the existing scheme has been modified to that extent making it simple and flexible so as to meet the desired results, that is, for immediate monetary help to road accidents victims.
The short-term and long-term financial reliefs under the modified scheme will be applicable to all cases on or after June 19, 2015.
