Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday defended his government’s decision to grant state recognition to ‘Asmitai Dis’, stating that the move reflects his government’s commitment to preserving Goa’s cultural identity alongside overall development.
Responding to criticism from the opposition, Sawant said that those opposing the decision have only continued to criticise without having taken similar initiatives during their long tenure in power. “For nearly 50 years of their government, they did not do anything like this. Whatever they have converted or done has already been explained in the House yesterday,” the Chief Minister said.

Sawant asserted that his government has focused on the comprehensive development of Goa while simultaneously safeguarding its traditional and cultural ethos. “Overall development of Goa has been achieved under my government, and at the same time, Goa’s identity has been traditionally preserved,” he added.
The Chief Minister reiterated that the recognition of ‘Asmitai Dis’ is part of a broader effort to honour Goa’s heritage and strengthen cultural pride among its people.
