VASCO: The game of musical chairs continues to the haunt the people of Vasco, as the Mormugao Municipal Council would create a history of sorts on Wednesday by electing councilor Tara Kerkar as the Vice chairperson. Kerkar will be the 15th councillor out of total 20 to become chairperson or vice chairperson MMC during their five year tenure.
The council has set a record by holding 15 elections (to elect chairperson and vice chairperson) in less than five years of the present term of the council, giving an opportunity to 15 councillors out of the total 20 to become chairperson or vice chairperson. And with still few months left before the council completes its five-year term, there is no guarantee that the remaining councilors will not be afforded the honour to be the chairperson or deputy.
Interestingly, Tara Kerkar would be making a comeback as vice chairperson just 13 days after she was removed from the post of chairperson. This time however the political equations have changed as she is reportedly enjoying joint support of Mormugao MLA Milind Naik and Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida, as per MMC sources.
It may be recalled that the post of vice chairperson fell vacant after 12 councillors of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) moved a no-confidence motion against MMC Vice Chairperson Premanand alias Babu Nanoskar, citing that he was involved in illegalities.
Therefore, within a span of five years, MMC has seen seven chairpersons and seven vice chairpersons and Tara Kerkar would be eighth vice chairperson. But what makes her special is the fact that she will be the only person in the present term who got opportunity to occupy the chair of chairperson and possibly also that of vice chairperson, as instability continues to dog local governments in Goa.
