While taxi owners demanded the detention of self-driven rented vehicles, the rent-a-car association demanded that their business be legalized.
Calangute MLA Michel Lobo, along with a delegation of the North Goa Taxi Owners Association (NGTOA) met Transport Assistant Director Uday Gauns requesting him to detain rented vehicles in north Goa. “The enforcement team of the Transport Department should be strict. I have requested the assistant director to detain these illegal vehicles for 15 days and then proceed to cancel their permits,” Lobo said after the meeting and suggested police intervention in detaining the vehicles.
He also said he has raised the matter with his party brass. “I have spoken to our senior vice-president about the people who want to legalise their permit which is illegal. I will also speak to the transport minister to resolve the matter,” he added. There are around 1,500 rent-a-car vehicles across Goa.
On the other hand, representatives of the North Goa Self Driven Rent-a-Car Association have demanded that their operation be legalized with commercial permits to operate in the state. Speaking to the media, association president Ramdas Pankar said, “There are about 500 cars which are seeking licenses to commercialise their permit. We are entitled to be commercialised as per transport norms. Our association has only 330 members who have been doing this business for a long time.”
He requested Lobo to come up with an amicable solution to the issue. “I request Michael Lobo, MLA to discuss the matter with us and resolve it,” he said.
