PANJIM: Secondary School teachers in Goa have decided to stage a 3-day dharna in Panjim from September 2 to 4 after school hours to demand withdrawal of the extended school timings by half hour, and pay protection.
The secondary school teachers will hold a protest march on Teachers’ Day, September 5, from Patto to Azad Maidan, at 4 pm. The decision to intensify its movement against certain alleged anti-teacher decisions by the government was taken by the All Goa Secondary School Teachers Association recently, as negotiations with the government on various issues, they allege, are making no headway.
According to President of AGSSTA Dattatraya Naik, “The government had assured to call the association for a dialogue which has not yet happened.”
“In case the government does not call us by Sunday we will write to the chief minister and education minister to address the teachers on September 5 at Azad Maidan where we will assemble after the protest march,” Naik said. The association had submitted a representation to the government recently enlisting all its grievances.
The main point was its demand for withdrawal of government decision to extend school timings by 30 minutes.
The association is of the firm belief that the extension of school timings and the subsequent decision of granting exemptions is a farce and violation of the education acts.
