Tourism dept plans community beach cleaning

PANJIM: Even as Goa government recently outsourced two Mumbai-based agencies for the beach cleaning project, tourism department is contemplating to simultaneously involve the community along the lines of Australia, United Kingdom and Hawaii that successfully tackled the problem of polluted beaches.

“Australia, UK and Hawaii faced the same problem as our beaches are going through. They managed to overcome the problem through community involvement. We are thus planning to generate public participation to maintain cleanliness on the beaches,” Tourism Director Ameya Abhyankar said.
The State launched ‘Clean Goa, Beautiful Goa’ campaign last week in a bid to ensure clean beaches where lakhs of international and domestic tourists throng annually. While M/s Bhumika Transport has been tasked with cleaning North Goa beaches, Ram Engineering and Construction Company will manage the South Goa. The government has already warned penal action against those found drinking liquor on the beaches.
 and litter public places.
The tourism department seeks public support to sustain cleanliness, who will be roped-in through beach related events.
