Traffic rules in Calangute to have localised touch

Traffic regulation in the coastal belt of Calangute will now have a localized touch. Goa Police have decided to start a Traffic Police station in Calangute considering the heavy inflow of vehicles in this belt.
Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Arvind Gawas said that three months ago, the station has been sanctioned and process to put it in place has already began.
He said that initially a separate traffic cell will operate from Calangute police station and later, it will be shifted to a new building forming a separate police station.
A police inspector, three sub-inspectors, four assistant sub-inspectors, 15 head constables and 30 police constables are sanctioned for this unit, which will take care of the traffic along the narrow lanes of the coastal belt.
“This staff will take care of the entire north Goa coastal stretch and hence it will lessen burden on the present traffic and police strength,” the SP said. The fresh staff will be appointed from the 157 traffic staff, which the state government has sanctioned for traffic police.
According to DySP (traffic) Jayprakash Nagvekar, there is almost 15 to 20 percent increase in the vehicles coming in from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala and Gujarat during the tourist season.
Also as IFFI, Christmas and New Year celebrations fast approaching, the department is making special arrangements to regulate traffic along the Goan roads, especially at the coastal belt. “Extra force will be deployed and sign boards will be placed at every important locations including where traffic is more. The buzz is more during this season,” said the DySP.
The department is meanwhile in the process of preparing a scheme of traffic control for the coming important days. Besides, extra barricades will be placed and coastal stretch will be under strict vigilance in terms of security and traffic, as well.
