CALANGUTE: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo has requested Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar and the Director General of Police (DGP) not to permit two mega music events in the coastal villages of Goa during Christmas.
Lobo has argued that the State government should allow only one mega music event due to growing number of robberies, thefts, etc, as the police are away manning the mega events.
Addressing media persons, Lobo said that recently during the IFFI and feast and Exposition of the relics of St Francis Xavier, there were a spate of thefts, robberies and dacoities in the State due to shortage of police personnel in the respective police stations, as the police including reserves were posted at Panjim and Old Goa.
“Shortage of police personnel at police stations gave an opportunity to robbers and thieves to break open houses and bungalows and decamp with gold ornaments and valuables. Luckily, there was no assault, but anything could have happened,” he said.
“The same could well be repeated again in view of clash of two mega events during Christmas, as police personnel will be diverted for the same, besides the Exposition at Old Goa. I would urge the DGP to oppose two mega music events at a time,” added Lobo.
“I have written to the DGP and the chief minister urging them not to permit two mega music events at a time as it serves no purpose. There is no increase in number of tourists due to two separate mega music events.”
“During the IFFI period, only six personnel were available at Anjuna police station, while there were only seven personnel at Calangute police station, which exposes the safety of villagers and tourists in the coastal villages. I would urge the chief minister not to permit two mega music events considering the ground reality,” said Lobo.
