Two citizens of the United States were detained at Srinagar Airport after security personnel recovered a satellite communicator and a GPS device from their luggage during routine screening, officials said.
The incident took place in Srinagar, where airport security flagged suspicious electronic items during a standard baggage check. The primary traveller was identified as Jeffry Scott Prather. He was immediately detained along with a fellow traveller, who is reported to be a US citizen of Indian origin.
Following initial questioning by airport authorities, both individuals were handed over to the Jammu and Kashmir Police for further interrogation. Officials said the devices recovered are subject to regulations, especially in sensitive regions like Jammu and Kashmir, where security protocols are strict.
Sources indicated that the matter is being investigated to determine the purpose of carrying such equipment and whether any rules were violated. Authorities are also examining if the devices were declared or had necessary permissions.
Police have not yet disclosed any charges, and further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
