A tragic shooting incident in Shreveport early Sunday claimed the lives of eight children, including a one-year-old, according to the Associated Press. Authorities said a total of 10 people were shot in what has been described as one of the most disturbing cases in the city’s recent history.
The victims ranged in age from one to around 14 years. Police revealed that some of the children were related to the suspected gunman, pointing to a possible domestic angle behind the violence.
Wayne Smith said the shooting stemmed from a domestic disturbance and unfolded across three different locations, complicating the investigation. Officials described the crime scene as extensive and unprecedented in scale.
Police spokesperson Christopher Bordelon said the initial shooting occurred on West 79th Street, with related incidents reported on Harrison Street and at a nearby residence where one victim fled for safety.
The suspect fled the scene after the shooting, allegedly carried out a carjacking, and was later tracked by police. A chase ensued, ending in nearby Bossier City, where the suspect was shot dead by law enforcement.
Authorities believe the suspect acted alone. No police officers were injured during the operation.
Louisiana State Police have taken over the investigation. Officials are continuing to gather evidence and have urged the public to share any information.
Calling it an unprecedented tragedy, Mayor Tom Arceneaux said the city is grappling with shock and grief.
