PANJIM: Residents of Fontainhas, Sao Tome, and Mala are on warpath. They have collected around 300 signatures and led by local Corporator Rudresh Chodankar have submitted a memorandum to the Corporation of the City of Panjim, demanding that it stop disposing garbage at the Patto plant immediately, failing which they will physically stop the activity.
According to the memorandum, the CCP has been disposing garbage collected from the city at its Patto site located behind SBI building at EDC’s Patto Plaza for many years, which leads to an unbearable stench in the area.
“The site is located adjacent to schools, residential and commercial establishments. Due to the disposal of garbage on a daily basis by the CCP, the neighbouring areas, especially Fontainhas, Sao Tome, and Mala area are affected due to the nuisance which causes health hazard,” says the memorandum. Children from Mary Immaculate Girls High School, People’s High School, Seventh Day Adventist are affected by the smell and on many occasions students have even vomited in school due to the foul stench.
Chodankar pointed out that lots of complaints have been received by the corporators asking that the site be stopped as the smell is gut-wrenching.
“In the interest of the residents and citizens being affected due to the disposal of garbage at the Patto site, it is hereby called upon you to stop disposal of any garbage at the site immediately, failing which the residents would have no option but to physically stop the activity,” says the memorandum.
