PONDA: What is the connection between a tribal leader, whose community is on the verge of extension in Goa and Mahatma Gandhi? Well, Nagya Mhadu Katkari of the Vanarmare Tribe (Katkari) was martyred by British police in 1930, during the Jungle Satyagraha at Chirner village, in Uran tehsil of Raigarh district in Maharashtra as a part of Gandhijis civil disobedience movement on September 25, 1930
Today his descendants paid him their tributes. The Vanarmare Tribe (Katkari Community) residing in Nirankal Bethora, remembered their community ancestor Nagya Mhadu Katakari,

When Mahatma Gandhi started the Civil Disobedience Movement with Salt Satyagraha, the tribal community along with satyagrahis began defying British authority by cutting grass, trees in jungles at Chirner village, to claim their right over the forest.
The British police opened fire on some Satyagrahis and 21-year-old Nagya, along with others, got martyred.
The tribal community celebrated Nagya’s martyrdom with great enthusiasm. Tributes were paid by garlanding the photo of the martyr. The programme was organised by Savendan Kendra from Sakhlim, which is working for the educational development of this community.
Present on the occasion were social workers, the Project Director of Savendan Kendra, Coordinator Dashrath Morajkar, Devanand Gaude, Kavita Yamkar and Gopal Powar, the local leader of Vanarmare/Katkari tribe at Nirankal.
