VASCO: A surprise inspection of the vegetable and fruit markets in Vasco was conducted on Tuesday by the Municipal Chairman Nandadeep Raut, councillors and the chief officer.
During the inspection, the officials warned the vendors not to litter garbage in the open and not to encroach on the path. The officials threatened strict action against those ignoring their warning.
The inspection was conducted after Vasco traffic police and residents complained that the fruit and vegetable vendors have been littering garbage in the open and encroaching on the path.
“We inspected that vegetable and fruit market and strictly instructed the vendors to do their business within permissible area. We warned them that if any sort of encroachment and obstruction on path is found, then, the municipality will seize the stock of commodities and fine will be imposed,” Raut said.
“We also instructed the vendors not to litter spoiled vegetables and other biodegradable garbage in open at the vegetable market and asked vendors to dispose it in the waste bins,” he said.
When contacted, Councillor Nilesh Navelkar said that there were complaints from the citizens that the vegetable and fruit vendors are keeping their commodities on the roadside which hindered free movement in the market.
“There were also complaint letters from Vasco traffic cell to clear the illegal encroachments from the roadside to have enough parking space for vehicles. Therefore, chairperson and councillors inspected the markets,” he added.
