Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Vice Chairperson Tara Kerkar had earlier sought help from Mormugao Deputy Collector Sabaji Shetye and Vasco police to curb the menace, which Herald had highlighted in a report on Wednesday. DySP Mohan Naik later directed all police stations under him to take prompt action against the beggars.
Naik stated that the police were taking many steps to eradicate the menace. However, the beggars kept coming back to the area, as they did not have homes. He said, “We booked several people under the Begging Act in the last two days and will also hold a similar drive in the future. However, the only issue is that the beggars lack houses. They will come back on the streets.”
Meanwhile, Vasco citizens praised the police for their prompt action and urged them to ensure that Vasco remained beggar-free. Vasco Councillor Krishna Salkar said, “We are thankful to the police. We cannot see any beggars in Vasco, especially the children, who were forced into the trade. Hopefully this absence will continue.”
