OLD GOA: Voicing his opposition to the proposed garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, St Andre MLA Vishnu Wagh on Monday asked the State government to declare the area as heritage site to prevent any project in future.
Wagh was addressing the panchas from Tiswadi, especially from Cumbharjua, St Andre and St Cruz constituencies, who were called for a meeting with Panchayat Minister Laxmikant Parsekar. The meeting was convened by the Directorate of Panchayat to deliberate on various issues faced by the panchayats.
“Since the site identified by the CCP to set up garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim, Old Goa, is located on the border of my constituency, I feel that such a plant should not come up at a place which has historic culture,” stated Wagh.
“Setting up of such plant will destroy the heritage value of Old Goa and I will oppose it along with Cumbharjua MLA Pandurang Madkaikar,” added Wagh.
Wagh said, “I won’t mind if the State government declare the area as a heritage site, after which even the builders lobby will not be able to come up with any project.”
MLA Madkaikar said he was happy to know that Wagh also shared the same sentiment. Parsekar opined that the State government plans to come up with state-of-the-art garbage treatment plants; however, these should not come up in places where locals and the MLAs oppose them, he said.
When contacted, Mayor of the Corporation of the City of Panaji Surendra Furtado said CCP had written to the mayor of Lisbon asking for help on technical experts from Portugal to set up a state-of-the-art garbage treatment plant at Bainguinim and Taleigao as they have excellent plants there. “I’m waiting for the reply,” added the CCP mayor.
