MARGAO: Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao on Wednesday assured the people of Benaulim Constituency that the works pertaining to the proposed Western Bypass project will not be carried out at least till the elections, and the authorities are working out other options in order to protect the agriculture land and water bodies.
He also appealed to the people of Benaulim Constituency not to be misguided with regard to the erecting of tents at Khareband, as it is to store the materials and nothing related to the works of western bypass project.

Churchill further informed that inspection will be held after the Diwali festival.
“We had suggested to the concerned authorities another option of a stretch of road from Seraulim to Varca. Recently, a meeting was held with Public Works Department Minister Deepak Pauskar, besides representatives of National Highway Authority and other concerned officials. The meeting deliberated on the given option,” said Churchill.
He further assured that works of Western Bypass project at Benaulim will not be carried out unless the authorities take final decision on the given option.
The Benaulim MLA said that the demand to build the Western Bypass from Seraulim to Varca on stilts should have come at the initial stages when the project was discussed at the district level.
“However, the former Sarpanch of Benaulim Royla Fernandes and former MLA Caitu Silva failed to raise the issue at the right time. But after electing as an MLA, along with Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai we took up the issue with the then Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar, and had demanded to protect the agricultural land by constructing the western bypass on stilts,” he added.
