PONDA: Forest officials from Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday rescued a wild boar that was caught in a trap at Talsai-Talualim, Ponda.
According to information, the rescue team of the Forest Department had to initiate the rescue effort as there was no competent official who could operate the tranquilizer gun.
“The concerned officials were on duty somewhere in south and there was no other officer who could have been deputed here. There was risk involved but keeping the well being of the animal in sight we decided to free it,” said a member from the rescue team.
According to sources, a metal wire trap was laid by some unidentified people, mainly to trap wild boars. On Sunday morning, Narvenkar during his routine visit to the hillock noticed the trapped wild boar and informed the forest officials.
“There were reports that some people had laid traps to hunt wild boars. I heard cries of an animal and to my surprise it was a wild boar trapped in the metal wire trap. I informed the forest official and gathered some local youth to keep watch,” informed Narvenkar.
The forest rescue team reached the site and discussed various ways to free the animal. However, after waiting for about two hours a couple of members from the rescue team successfully freed the animal at about 2.45 pm.
However, villagers were not happy with the forest official’s decision to free the injured animal saying that the animal could attack them as it is injured.
“The forest personnel have risked their lives but what about the injured animal? The animal could succumb to injuries and there is possibility that the injured animal could also attack villagers,” said Sanket Narvenkar of the animal rescue squad.
