Construction of the much awaited multi-storeyed pay parking lot at Margao’s old fish market is likely to commence shortly with the tender process being completed and the file sent to the Chief Engineer of Public Works Department for acceptance.
It may be recalled that the then Urban Development Minister Francis D’Souza along with then minister Avertano Furtado and many other dignitaries, including Margao Municipal Council’s then Chairperson Arthur D’Silva, had laid the foundation stone for this facility on September 15, 2015.
The parking lot will be multi storeyed with four-wheeler parking at the basement, ground and first to fourth floor. Administrative offices to be used by the Margao Municipal Council will come up on the fifth floor.
Besides, there will be parking facility in the open for around 11 four wheelers and 42 two-wheelers. The parking lot will be able to accommodate 112 four wheelers including the 11 to be parked outside.
MMC’s consultant Sankalp Architect designed the parking lot which will have a total built up area of 4881.15 square metres.
While there were only two bidders for the project, one Khandeparkar from Goa and the other being Manan Construction from Maharashtra, officials from MMC revealed that the Maharashtra party’s tender will be accepted that he will be asked to start the work.
The commissioning of the multi-storeyed pay parking will ease traffic congestion on Margao roads quite a bit as currently vehicles are parked on the road side thereby narrowing the roads to half the width and making motorists difficult to maneuvre them.
It would be pertinent to point out that the MMC had tried pay parking some years back but following protests it was withdrawn and then the multi storeyed pay parking project was promoted.
