PANJIM: The reconstruction of sluice gate and strengthening of the bund, that would prevent intrusion of saline water in the Khazan land at Neura, has been delayed by eight months. The work that was expected to be completed by April 4, has been given a new deadline, December 31, 2020.

A reply to Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) by Tiswadi Mamlatdar Rahul Desai informs about the deadline extension.
“The reconstruction of sluice gate and strengthening of the bund belonging to the Neura-O-Grande Tenant Association has been allotted to D K Bhomkar from Vollo Vado, Bhoma by the Office of Executive Engineer Soil Conservation Division (EESCD), Directorate of Agriculture. The said work was to be completed by April 4, 2020, however vide letter dated May 13 of the Office of EESCD the deadline of the execution work has been extended to December 31, 2020,” reads the report by Desai to GHRC.
Taking cognizance of Herald’s report dated May 3 titled “Knockout blow to Khazan lands as Neura farmers defeated by saltwater intrusion”, the Commission had directed that a report be submitted from the Agriculture Dept, WRD, Mamlatdar (Tiswadi) and the Neura Khazan Tenant Association.
The mamlatdar’s report further states that as per the letter by EESCD, the sluice gate and the bund will remain in possession of the agency during the course of the work so that the progress of the work is not hampered.
Herald had reported that several residents, who were involved with agricultural activities in their village khazan land, can’t cultivate their crops due to the saline river water intrusion.
