Youth called upon to carry Tiatr legacy forward at TAG competition

The importance of preserving and promoting tiatr among the younger gen eration was highlighted at the inaugural function of the 6th Inter-HSS/College/University Tiatr Competition organised by the Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG). The speakers at the function emphasised that the younger generation has an important role to play in carrying for ward Goa’s rich cultural tradi tions, particularly in view of the recent recognition of tiatr as the 56th element in the Na tional Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of India.

Minister for Panchayats Mau vin Godinho, who was present at the inaugural function, said the national recognition of tiatr was a significant achievement for Goa and the tiatr fraternity. Godinho said the younger generation should take for ward the legacy of tiatr while acknowledging the contribu tion of senior tiatrists who had worked over the years to devel op and popularise the art form. “Tiatr is our culture and it has no caste or religious re strictions. We must feel proud of having such a rich culture. Tiatr highlights several issues and happenings in Goan soci ety, besides family issues and politics,” he said. He also appreciated the ef forts of TAG President Anthony Barbosa and the council mem bers in taking tiatr to the young er generation and promoting it at the national level. Godinho assured his support to the ef forts being undertaken to seek UNESCO recognition for tiatr.

The function was attended by Guest of honour Fr Ron ny Fernandes, Manager of St Andrew Higher Secondary School, special invitee musi cian Allwyn Fernandes, TAG President Anthony Barbosa, Ravindra Bhavan, Vasco chair man Jayant Jadhav and others. Fr Ronny Fernandes high lighted the importance of tiatr and its contribution to Goan society. He appealed to stu dents and youngsters to take an active interest in tiatr and contribute towards preserving the unique Goan art form. Special invitee Allwyn Fer nandes also spoke about the role played by tiatr in pre serving Goan culture and pro moting it beyond the State. He appreciated TAG’s initiatives to encourage the younger gen eration and undertake pro grammes for the preservation and promotion of tiatr.

TAG President Anthony Bar bosa welcomed the gathering and appealed to students and youth to participate in tiatr as performers as well as attend performances to understand and appreciate the art form. Jadhav proposed the vote of thanks and assured support to TAG in its efforts to promote tiatr. The competition commenced with students of Kala Acade my’s Theatre Arts presenting ‘Monisponnacho Dhorm’. On the second day, students of St Xavier’s College, Mapusa, pre sented ‘Tuje Vinnem’. The competition provides a platform for students from higher secondary schools, col leges and universities to show case their talent while devel oping an interest in tiatr and Goa’s cultural heritage.
