PONDA: Tension flared in Undir-Gaune when four minor children were assaulted by a youth from Ponda, triggering a wave of local protests. The incident occurred when the children, who were on their way home, passed by a youth sitting with a friend at the roadside.

Following the assault, angry locals gathered at the Ponda police station, demanding swift action against the youth. The police responded promptly and arrested the individual. The youth, later claimed he thought the children were teasing him and taking offence, attacked them.
Locals informed that the road between the sluice gate, which offers a scenic beach-like view, has long been a popular spot for couples and young people. The road, which spans half a kilometre in length and is 12 metres wide, is isolated and features retaining walls that have become spots for sitting. However, the growing trend of late-night gatherings is increasingly causing nuisance to locals, particularly those who use the road for evening walks.
Bandora Sarpanch, Ramchandra Naik, expressed concern over the road’s misuse, explaining that it has been a hotspot for unwanted activities for several years. He said, “These activities go on late into the night and only lead to trouble and fights. We have had clashes in the past and it is becoming a serious concern.”
If a fight escalates, someone could be pushed into the water near the sluice gate, which could be even more dangerous.”
Naik has called on the police to take more stringent measures, including starting night patrolling, to curb the nuisance and prevent any further incidents. “The police must intervene to ensure the safety of our residents and preserve the peaceful nature of this road,” he added.
