RAIA: Cuncolim Union sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the Navelim Villagers Union Trophy with a nail-biting 8-7 win over Guardian Angel SC, Curchorem, via the tie-breaker at the Rosary Church ground, Navelim, on Friday.
In a thrilling, rain-hit encounter, Cuncolim had the first clear chance when Wilson Fernandes set up Tushar Gaonkar, whose shot was brilliantly tipped over for a corner by Guardian Angel goalkeeper Oswin Rodrigues. At the other end, Regan Costa missed a golden opportunity after being played through by Andrian, firing his attempt off target.
In the dying minutes, Daulat Dessai broke through the defence but failed to convert with only the goalkeeper to beat, as referee Fulzacio Cardozo’s final whistle ended regulation time goalless.
The tie was decided on penalties, with Cuncolim converting through Wilson Fernandes, Jollyton Fernandes, Shanker Gaonkar, Warren Dias, Sachin Velip, Mac Fernandes, Tushar Gaonkar and Vinod Velip. For Guardian Angel, Fhezer Gomes, Gleeson Fernandes, Godwin D’Costa, Ivo Costa, Milroy Clement, Drayan Fernandes and Alton Vaz found the target.
Wilson Fernandes of Cuncolim Union was named man-of-the-match, receiving the award from Richard Costa of Churchill Brothers.
