Dhoni set to return for MI clash, gives CSK major IPL 2026 boost

Chennai Super Kings are likely to receive a major boost midway through the league stage of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with MS Dhoni expected to return to full fitness ahead of their crucial clash against Mumbai Indians on April 23 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Dhoni, who had been sidelined due to a calf injury sustained during CSK’s pre-season camp, has already missed five matches. In his absence, Ruturaj Gaikwad has led the five-time champions. While results were inconsistent early on, the team has started to regain momentum in recent matches.

Reports suggest Dhoni is nearing full recovery and could feature in his first game of the season against MI. However, he is unlikely to travel for the April 18 away fixture against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Throughout his rehabilitation, Dhoni has stayed away from match venues, focusing instead on training sessions. He has spent significant time in the nets, recently working with batting coach Mike Hussey, although he has not yet faced frontline bowlers.

His return, however, could pose a selection dilemma. With CSK’s bowling unit already under scrutiny, the team may need to drop a batter. Sarfaraz Khan appears the most likely candidate, given the importance of players like Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, and Ayush Mhatre in the lineup.

Despite being sidelined, Dhoni has remained involved behind the scenes. His guidance was evident when Noor Ahmad delivered a match-winning performance against Kolkata Knight Riders, underlining his continued influence within the squad.
