PANJIM: The 18 Athletes from Goa who were part of the 273 athletes representing Special Olympics Bharat (India) at the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015 will arrive in the State in Jet Air at the Dabolim airport, on Wednesday, at 4 p.m.
They opened their medal tally on July 28 with Kushal Resham winning a gold medal in the 1000m roller skating rink race. The Goan roller skaters continued their winning streak with Kushal winning another gold medal in the 2×100 male relay and a bronze medal in the 300m rink race.
Riya Gawde won two silver medals in the 500m race and 2×100 relay. She was placed third in the 1000m race and received the bronze medal.
Urmila Parab won a bronze medal in the 500m race. Vishram Shivaji and Soniya Patil both won a gold medal each in athletics in the 400m walk and 200m run respectively. Soniya took home the silver medal after placing second in the 400m run.
The total medal tally of the athletes from Goa is six gold, three silver and nine bronze medals.
Billed as the largest-ever gathering of nations in the city, this year’s event included athletes and coaches from 165 countries. The 1984 Summer Olympics played host to 140 countries.
Following were the athletes: Soniya Patil, Shubham Salgaonkar, Vishram Shivaji (athletics), Riya Gawde, Urmila Parab, Avila Kane, Kushal Resham (all roller skating), Fatima Rodrigues, Alcia Antao, Tanawi Rane, Rachel Fernandes, Supresh Gaonkar (all volleyball), Sachin Suvarna (basketball), Daniel De Souza, Samir Das, Amit Fernandes (all football), Tukaram Sangaonkar, Vinay Ghade, Vishant Priolkar (all softball) and Jonathan Rodrigues, (Unified football).
Victor Vaz was the Head of Indian delegation. The coaches included Samantha D’Costa (volleyball), Amit Fernandes (football), Gareth Vaz, (roller skating), Vishant Priolkar (softball), Saish Naik (assistant coach of Unified football) and Antonio Froyes (badminton).
