RAIA: Mandopa Sports Club staged a dramatic comeback to defeat Santa Cruz Society of Poitomaddo Cuncolim, 5-3, via the tie-breaker, advancing to the quarterfinals of the Simon Barreto Memorial inter-village football tournament, organised by Maina Sports Club, at the DYSA ground, Curtorim, on Thursday.
The score remained 0-0 at the end of first half.
The second half began with a breakthrough for Santa Cruz as Arron Fernandes latched onto a through pass and fired into the net, giving his side the lead in the 45th minute. Undeterred, Mandopa fought back and Ronaldo Pereira found the equaliser in the 48th minute. The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 by full time, necessitating a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Mandopa converted through Nash Pereira, Noah Luis, Aden Pereira, and Meliston Dias. Santa Cruz scored via Ansh Patel and Viraj Velip, but it was not enough to prevent Mandopa from clinching victory.
Arron Fernandes of Santa Cruz Society of Poitomaddo Cuncolim was awarded the man-of-the-match by Joaquim Fernandes.
