MARGAO: Navelim Veterans defeated Ambelim Veterans 8-7 via tie-breaker to cruise into the semi-finals of South Goa inter-village veterans football tournament, organized by Fatorda Veterans, near Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Monday.
Both the teams were tied 3-3 at normal period. Ambelim led 2-1 at half time.
Edwin Lobo, who was on song struck twice in quick succession to give his team 2-0 lead. Stung by the lead, Navelim regrouped quickly and reduced the deficit when Socorro Pereira placed the ball to the far corner of the net.
Changing over, Navelim fought gallantly and equalized through Franky Fernandes. Spurred by the equalizer, Navelim went all out and Socorro again scored to give his team the lead but Ambelim’s Benjamin Silva cancelled the lead in the dying minutes. Navelim Veterans had last laugh in the ensuing tie-breaker.
