RAIA: Nerul Sports Club got the better of Sao Jose de Areal 6-5 via the tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of 45th Custodio Memorial inter-village football tournament organized by Raia Sporting Club, at Raia panchayat ground, on Saturday.
Both teams were leveled 2-2 at the end of full time. The first half was blank.
In the third minute, Alviton Silva of Sao Jose de Areal took possession of the ball connected by Princession Dias. Alviton released his trigger but to his dismay goalkeeper of Nerul SC Summit Shirodkar fisted away for a corner kick.
Then it was Nerul SC, who made an attempt in the rival goal, in the 6th minute Aniket Agarwadekar collected the ball from Anson D’Souza and the latter released a venomous strike but it went wide.
Sao Jose de Areal in the 15th minute through Nevil Soares had an opportunity to net in but his curled shot which was about to enter into Nerul SC goal was cleared to safety by Sidharth Shirodkar, defender of Nerul SC, denying a goal for Areal in the dying minutes of the first half.
In the second session, both teams started aggressively with a motto to score goals. A swift move by Paul Carvalho inside the box of Sao Jose de Areal in the 31st minute saw Paul coolly placing the ball into the rival goal to open an account for Nerul SC.
Nerul SC doubled the lead in the 37th minute through Aniket’s rasping right footer drive.
Down by two goals, Sao Jose de Areal raised their tempo and started attacking the rival citadel time and again. Later, they came to equal terms through Bresel Viegas and David Colaco in the 50th and 55th minutes.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Nerul SC netted through Sidhart Shirodkar, Deepak Sanglekar, Mangesh Giankar and Prashant Naik while Sao Jose de Areal scored through Haston Gomes, Bresel Viegas and Augio Antao.
