MAPUSA: Siolim Sodiem Sports Club scored a hard fought 3-2 win over mighty Candolim Sports Club, in the GFA Second Division League match, at Duler Stadium, Mapusa, on Thursday.
At halftime the score read 2-1 in favour of Candolim.
Candolim showed they meant business from the very start where in the early 6th minute of play Klieber D’Souza put them into the lead from the penalty spot after Sodiem’s Mukund Shirodkar was found guilty of handling the ball inside the 18-yard box, 1-0.
Hardly had Sodiem recovered from the goal deficit, Candolim further inflated the lead when Canute D’Souza unleashed a blistering shot which was too hot for keeper Salil Chari to handle and the ball rolled to Nehal Naik who slotted the ball home, 2-0.
After some midfield play Sodiem finally managed to reduce the margin when in the 38th minute Maruti Harijan made a brilliant run into the Candolim danger zone and set up Manesh Nair who fired the ball home, 1-2.
Changing ends, Sodiem pressed hard and managed to find the equaliser in the 65th minute of play when Sodiem’s Maruti Harijan was once again instrumental in scoring when he flashed the ball dangerously across the Candolim goal which was guided into the nets by Manesh Nair, 2-2.
Minutes later, Mukund Shirodkar managed to come with a goal line save to deny Gauresh Shirodkar was scoring.
The Sodiem outfit stunned their rivals when Maruti weaved his way past the Candolim defenders and sent a low shot which sneaked into the nets after brushing the legs of the defender, 3-2.
At Quitula grounds, St Savio’s Sports Club Calangute hammered PVC Parra 5-1.
It was Mathew Colaco and Mark D’Cruz who scored in the first session of play while changing ends Parra managed to pull a goal through Govind Mahale, 2-1.
