PANJIM: Sporting Clube de Goa are not giving up on their hopes of winning an I-League title as they face Mohun Bagan in an Airtel I-League clash at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Sunday.
Sporting Clube were placed second during the beak with only Bengaluru FC ahead of them by three points. Sporting Clube had a match in hand but since the I-League resumed, Sporting Clube have lost twice and drawn the other two matches.
The string of disappointing results have left them in fourth place with 29 points from 18 matches while Bengaluru FC, the league leaders, have 37 points from 19 matches.
“We are working on our weaknesses. The last four results have been disappointing and now is the time to put a stop. We have to start wining to get closer to the title,” said technical director Alex Alvares, whose side claimed just two points from a possible 12.
“The opening minutes will be crucial. We have to take the battle to the opposition and start piling on the pressure straight way. There are no easy and weak teams in the I-League, so Mohun Bagan will be as strong as everyone else”.
Bagan may have been challenging for the title at the start. The Kolkata giants are always title contenders, but this season they have found themselves pegged back and are now trying to save relegation.
On the points table, they find themselves placed ninth and there are four teams behind them. But Mohun Bagan have played 20 matches, while Churchill at the bottom of the pool have 15 points are three matches in hand.
