MARGAO: The Congress has mulled a contingency plan in Benaulim, Curtorim and Dabolim as presidents of these three blocks stayed away from the meeting of Congress block presidents from South Goa held at the district Congress office here to chalk out plan for Rahul Gandhi’s public meeting at Fatorda in the first week of April.
The contingency plan includes reviving the old Committees in the event the three blocks are hit by a crisis situation.
Around 17 out of the 20 block presidents made it for the meeting, barring the block presidents of Dabolim, Benaulim and Curtorim – who owes allegiance to MLA Mauvin Godinho, Churchill Alemao and Francisco Sardinha respectively. Of the three block Presidents, the Curtorim Block President Milagres Menezes has tendered his resignation from the post and from the primary membership of the party in protest against the injustice meted out to sitting MP Francisco Sardinha.
Their absence sent jitters amongst the Congress leaders, but PCC President John Fernandes, who attended the meeting along with South Goa Congress candidate, Reginaldo Lourenco, however played cool, urging the rank and file not to get tensed up with their absence. He later told Herald that the party will put a mechanism in place wherein the party will appoint someone in Dabolim, who will be considered for the party ticket in the next election. “There’s nothing to worry if the three block presidents have failed to attend the meeting. We have a contingency plan in place to deal with the situation”, John said.
He said the party will mobilise its workers and supporters for the rally at Fatorda ground in the first week of April to be addressed by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. A similar meeting will be address by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in North Goa, either in Bicholim or Mapusa around the same time, he added.
Replying to a question, he said the party workers are finally geared up for the April 12 poll and will participate in large numbers for the road show and small corners meetings across South Goa.
