BENAULIM: St Anthony’s SC Assolda registered a comfortable 2-0 win over Rozman Cruz, Nagoa-Verna to enter the quarter-finals of the 13th Bebe Costa Memorial inter-village football tournament, organised by United Club of Benaulim and played at St John the Baptist ground, Dando, Benaulim, on Monday.
Nagoa made the better start pushing Assolda deep into their own territory but their strike force of Euzabio Fernandes and Clive Coelho was ineffective.
Assolda surged ahead in the 45th minute when Nagoa’s Wilson Fernandes lost possession of the ball in the middle allowing Assolda’s Carrey Vaz to move up and push the ball to unmarked striker Macklon Colaco to fire the ball into the nylons. The late entry of Savio Fernandes of Nagoa increased the pressure on Assolda but Euzabio Fernandes and Hilton Fernandes were again off target. Assolda made the issues safe when substitute and diminutive striker Cajitan Fernandes ran on to a through pass by Juliao Fernandes to slot the ball home.
