CURCHOREM: Wilred Leisure Sports Club, Curtorim defeated Navelim Villagers Union 3-1 in the inaugural match of Fr Gervasio Pinto Memorial football tournament organised by Guardian Angel Sports Club, at Figuereido ground, Curchorem, on Wednesday.
The teams started on an attacking mode and Curtorim took the lead when striker Welson Fernandes slotted past the rival keeper with a snap shot in the 12th minute.
Changing ends, Navelim tried their level best to neutralise the lead and missed couple of scoring chances.
The joy of Curtorim doubled when their striker Welson added one more goal to their tally.
Spurred by the success, Curtorim intensified their forays and Welson got another opportunity to complete hat-trick after the referee awarded the penalty to Wilred.
A minute before the final whistle, Navelim VU scored through their striker Clinton Niasso.
Earlier, chief guest Parish Priest of Guardian Angel Church, Curchorem Fr Santan D’Souza, declared the tournament open in the presence of guest of honour Principal of Guardian Angel HSS, Curchorem and CCMC Chairperson Vishwas Sawant Dessai, Councillors Jesmine Braganza, Tony Coutinho and Tony Collasso.
