A second half brace from captain Elvis Fernandes, left Sao Minguel de Taleigao all shook up as they suffered a 1-2 defeat at the hands of a resilient Young Boys of Tonca, in GFA’s 2nd division at DSYA ground, Taleigao ground on Monday. Taleigao led by a solitary goal at the breather.
Bento Vaz, Nicholas Pereira and Stalin Baptista were booked for Sao Minguel, while Bradley Rogtao was the only booking for Tonca.
Tonca lost their central defender Luis Rogtao after only 11 minutes through injury and had to put their versatile midfielder Villroy D’Cruz into defence. At half time striker Peter Rodrigues was pushed into midfield where he blossomed with countless assists and also allowed Elvis to capitalize and gallop forward.
Sao Minguel suffered their first loss of the league after a run of four victories. San Miguel had defender Daniel Noronha out suspended and Anthony Levino Pereira moved from midfield into defence to replace him. Caetano Pinho was also missing in the midfield which prevented the breathtaking exhibition of attacking football from Sao Minguel.
Sao Minguel raced into the lead in the 29th minute when Pramod Mandrekar tapped in a cross from close distance.
Three minutes after the change of ends, Tonca’s Elvis swung a free kick in from the left side which was simply to powerful to stop and beat the goalkeeper at his far post.
Fifteen minutes from the end Elvis struck again, this time lifting the ball neatly over the goalkeeper after receiving a long pass from the defence.
The last five minutes was frantic as Sao Minguel pushed Tonca to the death to try and salvage something from the game.
Tonca are now on 8 points from six matches, while Sao Minguel stays on 12 points from five.
In a GFA 2nd Division match played on Sunday at Taleigao ground, Goa Police Sports Club defeated Agasaim Youth 4-2.
