VASCO: Taking serious cognizance of increasing beggar menace in Vasco city, the Vasco police on Monday intensified its ongoing drive to remove beggars from the main and busy junctions and from the corridors of Mormugao municipal building.
Police rounded up 10 beggars on Monday and after producing them before Mormugao SDM, police have decided to send the beggars to their native places. Similar drive would continue throughout the week.
According to Vasco police, some concerned citizens from Vasco had complained about increasing beggar menace in Vasco city. “People had complained that from streets to area near government offices and mainly area near the Mormugao municipal building is largely affected by beggar menace, so to provide relief to the citizens, I issued directions to my staff to control the menace from Monday before carnival float parade could start and action against beggars was initiated,” a senior police officer said.
“Though we were continuously monitoring and controlling beggar menace, on Monday we launched an extensive drive to curb beggar menace and 10 beggars were rounded up. Throughout the week we would continue the drive against beggars. All the beggars rounded up by police would be later sent to their native places and directions have been issued to keep a regular check on beggar menace so that Vasco city remains beggar free,” he said.
While the police have initiated crack-down on beggars, many women with toddlers in their arms have been frequently harassing the public in and around the bus stand area in Vasco. One can find many beggars near the office of Mormugao Mamlatdar which is located on the ground floor of the Municipal building, similarly the area near Vasco railway station is largely affected with increasing beggar menace.
