PANJIM: After facing criticism from the Opposition over his failure to meet the Prime Minister on the Mhadei issue, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant on Thursday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed the Mhadei water diversion project by Karnataka.

Sawant, who is in Delhi for a two-day visit, took to the social media to inform about his meeting with Modi. “Called on the Hon PM Narendra Modiji, in New Delhi today. Had fruitful discussion on wide ranging issues including mining, Mhadei, Mopa, upcoming ZP elections as well as various development projects in the State,” he wrote.
Further, he claimed that the Prime Minister has assured his continued support and co-operation for Goa’s cause.
The Chief Minister had faced flak from the opposition over the Mhadei issue and his failure to meet the Prime Minister on the issue. Sawant had met Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh and MoEF & CC Minister Prakash Javdekar on the Mhadei issue.
Despite Goa’s opposition the Centre has notified the Mhadei Water Tribunal award as per the direction of the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court had also rejected Goa’s plea to stop Karnataka from starting work on the Mhadei. It also said that the 2014 interim order of the Mhadei Water Disputes Tribunal will remain in force.
But the apex court also said its final verdict would depend on the outcome of the petitions filed by Goa, Karnataka and Maharashtra, the hearing of which has been fixed for July.
