PANJIM: Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday said the orange alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall will remain till Thursday morning, and that the warning for fisherman not to venture into the sea continues. IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the entire State.
Speaking to Herald, MET Director ML Sahu said, “The orange alert continues till Thursday morning with heavy to very heavy rainfall. The deficit is now down to 15 per cent with the total seasonal rainfall reaching the 96-inch mark.”
“The reason for dropping the red alert was that the upper air cyclone had weakened suddenly over Maharashtra-Konkan area. Rainfall will slowly reduce over the next few days,” Sahu said.He said that fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the next 24 hours as winds will be westerly to south westerly with speeds of 45-50 kmph temporarily reaching 60 kmph in gusts/squall. Since Saturday, rainfall played havoc in the State. The south-west monsoon normally withdraws from the coast by the end of September.
