PANJIM: In a bid to increase efficiency in the telecommunication sector and to deal with network connectivity issue, the State government on Saturday announced to erect 200 new mobile towers in Goa.

Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant said that government will erect 62 new mobile towers in the State as a part of its Telecommunication Policy to increase the connectivity in the first phase, while 138 would be installed in the second phase.
“Glad to announce that our government under the Goa Telecom Infrastructure Policy 2020, in the first phase has proposed erection of mobile towers at 62 locations. In the second phase, another 138 mobile towers will be proposed soon across Goa,” the Chief Minister said.
“This will greatly improve the connectivity and benefit all sections of the society including students, IT Professionals, Tech Start-ups, etc,” he added.
Marred by criticism over poor network connectivity across State, especially in the rural areas, the State Cabinet in August passed the Goa Telecom Infrastructure Policy 2020.
The policy aims to fulfill people’s expectations of fast and reliable internet connection anywhere and anytime as the demand for internet connectivity, through mobile or broadband connectivity has increased.
As per the policy, the companies cum operators will have to pay Rs 50,000 as a one-time licence fee to local governing bodies and that no additional permit will be necessary from them.
In urban and semi-urban areas, Rs 50,000 monthly rent will be paid by companies to the local bodies, while in rural areas the rent will be Rs 25,000 per month.
