Several thousand litres of water are going down the drain every day at Pomburpa spring, as the government has not made any arrangement to store it.
During the rainy season, there is a continuous flow of water down the hillock at Pompurpa. The people use the water that flows through the twin spouts provided at Pomburpa Spring, but the water that flows continuously by the side of the twin spouts in large quantity is unutilized.
A Chodankar of Pomburpa said during the rainy season, there is continuous flow of water down the hillock.
“If an underground reservoir is built and flow of water is connected to that reservoir, then this water could be used for irrigation and other domestic purposes,” said Chodankar.
“The government has spent about Rs 1 crore for the beautification of Pompurpa Spring and they could have spent few more lakhs of rupees on the construction of storage tank for this water, as the village is facing shortage of potable water,” opined Chodankar.
“The government speaks about rainwater harvesting, but it does not take any step to store the rainwater, which is available in ample quantity at Pompurpa Spring,” added Chodankar.
Fr Santana Carvalho said the tourism department should make an arrangement to store the spring as well as rain water and release it for villagers for domestic consumption.
“The locals in large number wash their clothes at the spring. The government should make separate arrangement for washing of clothes to maintain cleanliness at the site,” opined Fr Carvalho.
